DC Professional Development Series: Prioritizing Well-Being is Key to Employee & Business Success

According to the National Institutes of Health (2021), nearly 1 in 5 adults struggle with their mental health. Especially now, with rising inflation and economic uncertainty, new fears are compounding and leaving many feeling overwhelmed and emotionally depleted. In an age where companies are seeking solutions to stay afloat in an increasingly unstable economy, employers must acknowledge the crucial connection between emotional well-being, workplace performance, and company success. With studies showing a clear link in unresolved mental health issues and employee performance, the evidence is clear– if you want better business results, support employee well-being.

Analyzing the connection between employee emotional well-being and employee success: Emotional well-being plays a significant role in professional success. Sound emotion and mental state results in better concentration, decision-making, and problem-solving effectively, resulting in higher productivity and work quality. When mental well-being is prioritized, there is space to foster positive relationships in the workplace which in turn enhances collaboration, and improves conflict resolution. Furthermore, emotional well-being equips employees with adaptability and resilience - facilitating an easier time navigating challenges, bouncing back from failures, and adapting to changing circumstances. Finally, prioritizing employee emotional well-being contributes to high employee retention, a positive company reputation, and customer satisfaction. By creating a supportive work environment and valuing employee well-being, companies can achieve sustained success, growth, and a competitive advantage.

How companies can support well being: Embedding emotional and mental well-being into company culture and supporting wider policies that protect employee benefits may be a key component of keeping employees and businesses thriving. Three key strategies that companies can employ to support employee mental health are:

1) Promote work-life balance: Encourage employees to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life by implementing remote work options and ample paid time off policies. Encouraging employees to disconnect from work during non-working hours promotes their well-being and prevents burnout.

2) Provide access to good healthcare that includes mental healthcare: Ensuring that employees have access to quality health insurance that covers mental health services provides basic support to employees to maintain their health.

3) Fostering a positive and supportive work environment: Create a culture of respect, appreciation, and inclusivity. Encourage open communication, provide constructive feedback, and recognize and reward employees' efforts and achievements. It is crucial to celebrate diversity and create opportunities for employee engagement and team-building activities.
